Why is it useful?
• You will develop your Drama is an exciting, creative and challenging subject that will involve participating in a wide range of activities — you won't be stuck behind a desk!
• Drama is particularly suited to pupils who are looking for a very practical subject — 60% of the GCSE is awarded for practical work completed during the course.
• Studying Drama will help to develop and increase your self- confidence.
• understanding and appreciation of live theatre through your participation in a series of theatre visits.
• You might want to specialise in the technical theatre aspects of the course such as lighting, sound, costume or set design — remember; the course is not just about acting!
During the course you will...
• study and perform in a scripted piece of Drama.
• study a live theatre production that you have seen.
• present practical work for at least two controlled assessments.
• develop your understanding of different genres and performance styles.
• learn how to create, interpret and communicate a character.
• use improvisation skills in a range of contexts.
• develop your understanding of design and technical theatre.
• acquire reflective and evaluative skills in response to the drama.
• work creatively and collaboratively with others.
You will be expected to...
• show commitment to the group and rehearse outside of lesson time.
• complete a written drama log each week to evaluate your work.
• take part in evening performances for parents, friends and family.
• participate in after school theatre trips and workshops.
Studying this subject could lead to...
further study at A/S and A2 Level in Drama and Theatre Studies within the Sixth Form. Studying Drama develops key skills such as communication, problem solving, critical thinking, analysis and working effectively with others. Drama therefore compliments many other subjects — particularly English, Media Studies, Dance and Music.
