English Literature
Controlled Assessment - Shakespeare and contemporary drama worth 25%
Written Examination (two papers) - Literary heritage and poetry worth 75%
Why is it Useful?
Employers, colleges and universities will need to know that you have a good command of both written and spoken English. It is always one of the subjects you are asked about at interviews. English is particularly necessary if you intend to study at a higher level. You must have English Language GCSE at Grade C or above to be accepted at University, whatever the degree course you choose.
What does it involve?
During the course you will study English Language and English Literature. Both subjects are taught in normal English lessons but you will have the chance to gain a GCSE in two subjects. Texts studied include Shakespeare's 'Othello', 'Of Mice and Men' by John Steinbeck, 'The View from the Bridge' by Arthur Miller and a range of poetry and non-fiction, including media text.
