Course Description
You will study contemporary aspects of German speaking countries and will be expected to use and understand the German language through a variety of sources: TV news and magazine programmes, radio advertisements, talk and discussion programmes.
Topics covered at AS Level German:
Media (TV, advertising, ICT), Popular Culture (cinema, fashion, music)
Health/lifestyle (sport, health, holidays), Family/relationships (family, friendships, marriage/partnerships).
Topics covered at A2 Level German:
Environment (pollution, energy, protecting the planet).
Multicultural Society (immigration, racism, integration).
Contemporary Social Issues (wealth and poverty, law and order, impact of scientific and technological progress).
What is expected of me as a German student?
You will be expected to expand on the skills practised at GCSE. In order to complete the course successfully, you will have to demonstrate the ability to:
• develop more independent study regarding reading, vocabulary learning, practising grammar and listening activities such as tuning into the radio, satellite channels, internet or reading foreign newspapers where appropriate
• be prepared to join in class discussions and express yourself in the target language
• learn to manipulate key structures for more independent written and spoken German
• conduct independent research for units 2 and 4 (speaking) and unit 3 (writing section) which involves collecting key facts and information for analysis and discussion
Career Pathways
German will complement most other subjects for example Business Studies, Economics, Law, Geography, History, Media Studies, Sciences, or another language.
German A-level offers an entry into higher education and many career opportunities including business careers, banking and finance, law, the tourist industry, work abroad, teaching, interpreting and translation work.
Having German at an advanced level will make you a much more attractive prospect to future employers.
