Course Content

Unit 1 – People, Politics and Participation
Voting behaviour, systems of election, political parties in the UK, pressure groups and protest movements in the UK
Unit 2 – Governing Modern Britain
The workings of Parliament, The Prime Minister and Civil Service, European, Welsh and Scottish politics and government
Unit 3 – Political Ideologies
Topics covered include: Fascism, Socialism, Liberalism, Conservatism and the BNP.
Unit 4 – Ideologies in Action
Topics covered include: Immigration, Asylum, Racism, Education and Feminism.

Why take AS/A2 Government and Politics?
You will look at how parties are tackling social issues in the UK like race, immigration, sexism and equality and on an international scale how the government is dealing with climate change, world poverty and the attempt to democratise what it sees as authoritarian and authoritarian governments

What is expected of you as a student?
Politics is fully essay based both in terms of long and short answers.   As a result, a great deal of reading and research needs to be undertaken by you.   You will be expected to demonstrate a critical approach to the course and be able to apply knowledge to real life political situations.   You will need to be able to evaluate governmental activity in the context of its impacts on citizens.

Career Pathways:
Degrees in Business Studies, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Law, Politics among others.
Lucrative careers as an entrepreneur, as well as employment in major banks, pharmaceuticals, marketing and media organisations.   Governmental work is also an option.   The majority of roles available in “The City” and “Canary Wharf”.   International work, although studying a second language would be of maximum benefit in this case.
