PE Introduction
The Department consists of a team of 7 full time specialists. Physical Education is a thriving, successful and popular subject within the School, taught for 4 periods a week to all pupils in Years 7 to 9, and for 2 periods a week to pupils in Years 10 and 11 where Sports Leadership is also offered. In addition, Physical Education and Dance are taken as examination subjects to GCSE, AS and A2 level. The Department also offers BTEC Sports and Exercise Science.
At KS3 boys are taught Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Fitness, Football, Hockey and Volleyball. Girls are taught Badminton, Dance, Fitness, Hockey, Netball and Volleyball.
At GCSE, the Department offers the OCR GCSE Physical Education and Physical Education (Games) syllabus and for Dance the AQA syllabus. Pupils who chose GCSE PE as an option have 3 one hour and ten minute lessons per week; 2 of the lessons are practical and 1 is theory. GCSE Dance is taught as 1 practical and 1 theory lesson. The theory is taught during core lesson time and the practical lesson is after school once a week.
Currently there are 6 groups at GCSE PE, consisting of approximately 120 pupils in Years 10 and 11, and 4 groups at GCSE Dance with over 60 pupils taking the subject in Years 10 and 11. The GCSE PE results for academic year 2006-07 were 97% A* to C grades with 58% of pupils achieving A* or A grade. GCSE Dance results achieved 78% A* to C grades.
At AS/A2 the Department offers the Edexcel Physical Education syllabus and the AQA Dance syllabus. Both subjects are taught over 4 lessons of one hour ten minutes a week. 2007 saw the start of our new BTEC Sports and Exercise Science course.
Currently there are 3 groups of AS and A2 Physical Education students with approximately 50 students and 2 groups of AS/A2 Dance with 15 students studying at this level.
AS and A2 PE results have been highly successful since there inauguration in 2003. AS results for the academic year 2006-07 were 100% pass rate with 55% of students achieving A and B grades . At A2 there was a 100% pass rate with 87% of students achieving A and B grades. Many of these students have gone on to study Sport Science or Physical Education at degree level at leading Sports universities.
The Department works in a purpose built Sports Centre consisting of a five badminton court sports hall, a Gymnasium, a fitness suite, a dance studio and a dedicated classroom with fitted interactive white board and projector. There is also a computer equipped staff office. Other facilities include a hard court area, all weather tennis courts, a playing field and an offsite playing field for fixtures.
The Department competes at district, county and national level with success. Highlights from last year’s sporting calendar include:
• The Volleyball Team were again County Champions for their age group.
• Year 11 Boys Football Team won the London Cup.
• Years 7, 8 & 9 were District Basketball Champions.
• Year 9 Basketball Team won the English School’s ‘C’ Competition Cup.
• Years 12/13 were District Basketball Runners Up.
• U14 Girls were District Basketball Runners Up.
• Year 9 Basketball Team were Runners Up of the Basketball Essex Cup.
• Year 8 Basketball Team reached the Quarter Final of the Basketball Essex Cup.
• U14 Girls Football Team reached the Quarter Final of the Essex Cup.
• Year 7 Boys Football Team reached the Quarter Final of the Essex Cup.
