Course Content

Unit 1: Participation in Sport and Recreation - This unit is divided into two sections.   The first investigates what constitutes a healthy and active lifestyle and the second considers how competitive sport has developed over time.

Unit 2: The Critical Sports Performer - The fundamental ethos for this unit is to engage participants in four tasks.   This establishes a framework of opportunities to develop practical experiences and conduct independent research into the structure, provision and analysis of sport and physical activity.

Unit 3: Preparation for Optimum Sports Performance – You will develop a knowledge and understanding of the short and long-term physiological and psychological preparations made by elite athletes.

Unit 4: The Developing Sports Performer - You will construct a development plan to further their performance as players, leaders or officials.

What is expected of me as a student?

You should also have an aptitude for sport.   You will need to have an interest in participating and learning about the social, physiology and psychology of sport.   You will be expected to wear appropriate kit when doing practical lessons.   Essays in Physical Education are not lengthy, but you will need to be able to cope with the demands of researching and essay writing.

Sports Colleges. 
Universities that offer degrees in Physical Education, Sport Studies, Dance, Leisure and Sport Physiotherapy and Psychology.   It can lead to jobs in coaching, teaching and the leisure industry.


 
Edexcel Level 3 BTEC National Certificate in Sport and Exercise Sciences
Assessment 
There are five core units plus seven specialist units that provide for a combined total of 720 GLH (Guided Learning Hours) for the complete qualification which is equal to two A2 passes.   The first year qualification is equivalent to an A2 level.  Assessment is through written and practical pieces of coursework with each unit worth 60 marks.

 

Course Content
Year 12 Core Units:
Unit 1: Anatomy for Sport and Exercise – structure and function of the skeletal system, muscular system, cardiovascular system and the respiratory system.
Unit 2: Sport & Exercise Physiology – understand the initial responses of the body to exercise, how the body responds to steady-state exercise, fatigue and how the body recovers from exercise and how the body adapts to long term exercise.
Unit 3: Sport & Exercise Psychology- understanding the effect of personality in sports situations, the impact of stress, arousal and anxiety on performance, the psychology of group dynamics in sports environments and the psychological factors that affect people in exercise environments.
Unit 4: Research Methods for Sport and Exercise Sciences – understanding the key issues in research methods for sport and exercise sciences and using data collection techniques for the sport and exercise sciences.
Year 12 Option Units
Unit 1: Practical Individual/Team Sports – be able to use a range of skills, techniques, and tactics in selected sports, understand the rules and regulations of selected sports, be able to assess own and others performance in selected sports
Unit 2: Sport & Society – how sport is organised, the sports industry in the UK, how contemporary issues affect sport and understanding cultural differences in sport.

Year 13 Core Unit
Unit 5: Research Project in Sport and Exercises – be able to plan a sport science or exercise based research project, conduct a sport science or exercise science based research project, be able to produce a sport science research project and be able to evaluate it

What is expected of me as a student? 
You will need to have an interest in coaching, participating, and learning about the social, physiology and psychology of sport.   You will need to be prepared to do mainly written assignments and meet deadlines as all the course is assessed through coursework.   You will also be expected to wear appropriate kit when doing practical lessons.

Career Pathways
Sports Universities, Universities offer degrees in Physical Education, Sport Sciences, Dance and Leisure and Sport Industry.
Careers in Physiotherapy and Sports Psychology.   It can also lead to career opportunities in sports coaching, teaching, leisure industry, sports media; sports governing bodies like the FA are some examples.

What is expected of me as a student?
It is a requirement that you take an interest in choreographing, interpreting, performing and analysing dance.   Over the two years of this course, you will be expected to work hard practically, revise for examinations and meet deadlines for coursework.   You will also be expected to wear appropriate kit when doing practical lessons. 

 

Why take AS/A2 Dance?
This is a course for someone who is interested in pursuing a career in the creative arts industry or to go onto university to study in this field.

 

Course Content:
Unit 1: Understanding dance
• The dancer as a performer: knowledge and understanding of the demands made in practice and performance on the dancer
• The process and craft of choreography: Own work and that of professional repertoire
• The significance of dance: Own work and that of professional repertoire
Unit 2: Choreography and performance
• The process of solo choreography from investigation and research of ideas through to outcome
• The development of physical and interpretive skills in relation to performance of the solo choreography
• The development of performance skills within a duo/trio performance context
Unit 3: Dance appreciation: Content and context
• Areas of study – Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes (1909-1929), Modern Dance in Britain (1965-1985), Dance in the American Musicals of the 1930s and 1940s.
• The set work – ‘Beach Birds for Camera’ (Cunningham, 1991), ‘Cinderella’ (Ashton, 1948), ‘Revelations’ (Ailey, 1960).
Unit 4: Group Choreography and Solo Performance
• Experience choreography and performance through practice.
• Develops an understanding gained in Unit 2.
• Directly links to the theory work completed in Unit 3.

 

Career Pathways:
Dancer, Lighting/costume/set designer,  Sports Media, Journalist – critic, Actor/actress, Choreographer,  Physiotherapist, Physical education/dance teacher.
