The Core Course
PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORTS LEADERSHIP LEVEL 1 AWARD
Why is it useful?
Learning how to become fit and stay fit is essential for a healthy and enjoyable lifestyle. The Physical Education course is aimed to provide you with a variety of practical experiences that will promote health and fitness in your current and future lifestyles.
The Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership is a nationally recognised qualification that enables successful candidates to lead small groups in sport and recreational activities whilst under the direct supervision of their teacher.
What does it involve?
The Physical Education course will allow you to extend and develop both your ability to perform, and understanding of, sports previously learned at Key Stage 3. As in previous years, it will allow you to develop the physical skills and knowledge required for an active and healthy lifestyle. Physical Education at Key Stage 4 will enable you to be more creative; develop individual ideas; achieve individual goals; organise and enter competitions; overcome a variety of challenges.
The Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership teaches leadership skills such as organisation, planning, communication and teamwork through the medium of sport. It is a fun and practical qualification that focuses on leadership rather than technical ability. There are no written examinations to sit.
You will be expected to...
• bring the correct kit to ALL lessons.
• work extremely hard.
• show commitment to the rest of the group.
• have a desire to become a good leader, official or coach.
What about the course?
Through the Physical Education course you will develop more advanced skills and knowledge in the following sports:
Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Fitness, Football and Rounders. You will also learn new sports like Volleyball and Trampolining. Through the Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership you will plan, prepare and assist a sporting activity; develop your understanding of the role of the sports official, the importance of fair play and the range of local sports and recreation activities.
You will continue to learn the rules, etiquette and tactics required by sport and be encouraged to apply your knowledge and skills whilst working to your full potential.

Why is it Useful?
Physical Education can offer the opportunity for you to perform and analyse in an area where you have a genuine interest.
Participation in this subject will lead to: the acquisition of leadership qualities; being able to communicate with others easily; increased self-confidence; gaining skills which involve the body and the mind; enjoying participation in a competitive and practical subject; an ability to appreciate all levels of sport.
During the course you will study...
Sports from: Football, Basketball, Cricket, Table Tennis, Rounders, Netball, Tennis, Hockey, Volleyball and Badminton.
Theory: Factors affecting participation and performance. Relationships between Health, Fitness and Games. Risk assessment in games.
If you choose this course you will be expected to...
• work extremely hard.
• have a desire to do the subject.
• bring correct kit to all lessons.
• have a responsibility to the rest of the group.
• be willing to revise hard for all exams.
• show maximum effort in all practical lessons, as you will always be assessed.
• have an appreciation of the theory part of the course, as this will not be an easy option.
Studying this subject could lead to...
• the study of Physical Education at A/S and A2 Level in the Sixth Form.
• a career as a physiotherapist, physical trainer, sports coach/instructor, leisure centre manager, dietician, or even a P.E teacher. You may also have a desire to be a sports journalist, photographer or presenter.

You should think about taking the subject if...
• you enjoy practical work and would like to participate in sport three times a week.
• you would like to gain the equivalent of 2 GCSEs at the end of a two year course.
• you are interested in taking a course assessed by coursework rather than examination.
• you would like to take advantage of the School's sports facilities, including its state of the art fitness suite.
• you are interested in gaining work experience in the sports industry: this could be a local football club, gym or sports centre.
During the course you will...
• develop your understanding of the principles of training and how to construct your very own training programme.
• learn about the body and how it reacts to participation in sports activities.
• take part in a variety of sports activities in which you will be able to apply the knowledge you gain from the course.
• look at different types of injuries that occur within sport; develop an understanding of how to manage, treat and prevent such injuries; and become a fully qualified first aider.
• consider the psychological effects sport can have on the elite performer and learn how successful sportsmen and women cope with the demands of high class sport.

• participate in group discussion as well as work independently.
Studying this subject could lead to...
• the study, in Sixth Form, of Physical Education at A/S and A2 Levels, or the study of Sport and Exercise Sciences as part of a BTEC Level 3 National Certificate.
• a career as a physiotherapist, personal trainer, sports scientist, coach, instructor or manager.

Why is it useful?
Dance can offer the opportunity for you to perform and analyse in an area where you have a genuine interest. You may wish to dance professionally, be a dance teacher, choreographer, dance journalist or dance photographer. You may also have a desire to be a physiotherapist, stage manager, or dance for your local amateur operatic and dramatic society. This course is an excellent foundation and can help you access a stage management course or further/higher education courses.
During the course you will…
• analyse a wide range of dance styles and visit the theatre.
• perform and choreograph in different styles.
• learn about technical and expressive dance skills.
• learn how to choreograph effectively and how to develop your ideas.
• study different dances to learn about their structure, the choreographer, the style and the idea being communicated.
You will be expected to…
• bring correct kit to all lessons and work extremely hard.
• show maximum effort in all practical lessons, as you will always be assessed.
• have an appreciation of the theory part of the course and revise purposefully.
• be able to organize group work and show initiative.
Studying this subject could lead to…
gaining leadership qualities; being able to communicate with others easily; increased self-confidence; gaining skills which involve the body and the mind; participation in a practical and creative subject; an ability to appreciate all styles of dance.
