Introduction

The Faculty has its own block of specialist rooms for Art, Textiles, Product Design, Graphical Communication and Multi Media. There is also a purpose built computer room.

During the course of key stage 3 we aim to offer the students access to as broad an experience as possible. The students should experience;
Drawing
Painting
Printing
Sculpture
Textiles
Graphics
Ceramics
Wood
Metal
Plastics
Card construction

All the modules have a common structure based upon the art and design and technology process of:

Brief – Research – Ideas – Designs – Development – Making – Realisation – Testing – Evaluation

The modules also emphasise the key skills recognised in the achievement of a C grade at GCSE.

The pupils work predominantly in sketchbooks as the process of art and design is as significant as the final piece itself. As an integral part of the modules they all include aspects of numeracy, oral, written and visual literacy, citizenship and critical and historical study.

As a department we seek to provide for two main categories of pupils: those who will only have the brief experience of Art Design and Technology during their key stage three education and for those who will continue in the Department to study at GCSE and beyond. We seek therefore to maintain as broad a curriculum as possible and to expose the pupils to as many experiences as we have the specialism to do so as well as providing them with the means to appreciate Art and Technology for a lifetime.

All pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 follow a Art Design and Technology Foundation Course that provides a wide range of ‘design and make’ situations. The separate subject specialisms are taught in the Lower School to enable each pupil to develop the skills required to follow any of the Design and Technology subjects to successful GCSE’s and on into AS and A2.

At Key Stage 4 Product Design, Art and Design, Graphics and Textiles are offered to GCSE.

There is a gifted and talented programme with pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 being entered for GCSE Art early.

In the Six Form the Department offers Product Design, Graphics, Textiles and Art and Design to AS and A2 level.
